Creative editorial breif

The brief is to take a portrait of up and coming guitarist Josh Horvat for the cover of good weekend magazine. The portrait is to show his strong connection and attachment to guitar.

My Idea for this editorial portrait was strongly influenced by something that Josh said to me. He was trying to describe his relationship to guitar and said that although he loved guitar, like with anyone who practices an art form he would get frustrated and fed up with guitar. However even when he gets into this frustrated state of mind he is unable to put his guitar down he is attached almost to the point of addiction.

Rather than trying to depict his love of guitar I have decided to try and show how that even when he is fed up and frustrated with the guitar he is unable to put it down.

I will show this by tying his guitar to his back with a guitar lead. Josh will be hunched over slightly to make it look as though he is struggling to hold the wait of the guitar on his back. Josh will be turned away from the camera so that his back with the guitar is facing the camera. He will be looking back over his shoulder so that his face will be visible.
Here are a few photos that I used as inspiration
Relix magazine, FrancescoCarrozzini, 2010

This Cover for relix magazine features a photo of Keith Richards embracing his guitar Shows his love for guitar. This was inspirational to me however I want to show the opposite emotion in my photo.

This photo is of red hot chilli peppers guitarist john frusciante. This portrait is a classical portrait of a guitarist. This is a very common style of portrait used for guitarist. I am trying to avoid this overdone style of photo.

This is another photo of john frusciante, however this photo is more what I’m aiming for(without all the religious connotations)as it is quirky and interesting.

Lighting
I will use two main light sources I want quite soft light so I will use soft boxes or a dufused light source. I will also use another small light to light up the back ground and ensure there are no shadows or discolouration on the backdrop.
